The Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist II (LA/PII) works with patients in the medical setting to obtain blood specimens through venipuncture and/or finger sticks and non-blood specimens such as urine, sputum and swabs for laboratory testing. Performs screening/waived tests and reports results to the appropriate staff. Processes and properly labels specimens to prepare them for laboratory/reference laboratory testing, gathers and appropriately packs specimens for courier transportation and completes the batching to ensure all specimens are properly tracked. This position shall perform Department of Transportation (DOT) drug testing once collector compliance has been achieved. In addition to the laboratory testing, the LA/P II is responsible to perform EKG’s and Holter Monitors. The Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist II must be proficient in all areas of the Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist I prior to moving into the position of a LA/P II. To be successful in this position, the LA/P II will need be thorough when carrying out duties, successful in maintaining records of specimen collections/transports and ensuring accuracy of orders. Customer service and providing an excellent patient experience are key attributes of the position. This position reports to the Phlebotomy Supervisor.
Position Qualifications:
High school diploma with classes in chemistry, biology and algebra preferred.
Associate Degree preferred.
Completion of a lab assistant training course or other appropriate training program preferred. Familiarity with routine laboratory tests.
Valid Illinois driver’s license
