Job Description

Position: Director of Patient Access

Location: Syracuse, NY

Our client is seeking a highly experienced and dynamic Director of Patient Access to join their team in Syracuse, NY. As a key leadership position within the Admitting Office/Patient Access department, the Director will oversee the development and execution of strategies to meet key performance indicators, improve operational efficiency, and ensure the accuracy of patient and billing information. This role requires a leader who will work closely with various departments, including Revenue Cycle Directors, to enhance patient experience, implement quality control programs, and manage a high-performing team.

Director of Patient Access Position Responsibilities:

  • Provides effective leadership and direction to the functional work stream that result in the achievement of key performance indicators as established by senior leadership for areas of oversight.
  • Produces and analyzes monthly performance and key metrics reporting for areas of oversight. Determines any negative trends and provides performance improvement remediation action plan.
  • Develops and produces weekly and monthly reporting; investigates and reports any trends or unusual findings.
  • Responsible for establishing benchmarks and standards for all areas.
  • Implement a quality program and reporting process for all areas that impact the ability of Patient Accounts to meet departmental and hospital goals.
  • Collaborates with the Revenue Cycle Directors and conducts regularly scheduled meetings with departments to review denials and rejections.
  • Monitors accuracy of demographic patient and third party billing information gathered by Patient Access areas.
  • Responsible for monitoring patient complaints and reports any unresolved issues to the appropriate department or appropriate management. Maintains reports of trends of complaints to initiate corrective, as well as preventative action plans.
  • Develops internal systems utilizing appropriate resources to support the operating needs of the assigned department(s) of responsibility including, but not limited to: finance, planning, marketing, advertising, information systems, human resources and other support systems. Coordinates financial and budgetary acquisitions, allocations and utilization of resources needed for quality, cost-effective, program(s)/service(s).
  • Develops, plans, and evaluates short, mid and long-term goal setting and goal achievement through facilitation and guidance consistent with the strategic plan.
  • Attends and actively participates in hospital and performance improvement councils and committees as requested.
  • Performs staff management functions related to employee selection, on-boarding/orientation, coaching/development, staffing, work assignments, performance management and goal alignment as guided by hospital policy and procedures and collective bargaining unit agreement (when applicable).
  • Conducts regular staff meetings to disseminate hospital and/or department/division information and allows for discussion of staff concerns needing clarification or resolution.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by senior leadership.

Director of Patient Access Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or other related field, Masters Degree preferred
  • 8-10 years health care Patient Access, Finance, Revenue Cycle or Healthcare Business experience with 5 years in a leadership position in a hospital/ acute care setting. Must have understanding of healthcare revenue cycle, payor contracts and applicable rules and regulations affecting reimbursement for healthcare services. In depth knowledge of general business concepts including financial management and accounting principles and practices.
  • Healthcare Access Management Certification (CHAM), Healthcare Financial Management Association Certification (CHFP) or Healthcare Financial Management Association-Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR) or other related certification preferred.

Salary: $125,000 - $150,000 per year
